After being loyal Honda brand owners for decades, my husband and I gradually lost trust in Honda’s ability to maintain integrity, especially in their servicing of our cars. Earlier this year we decided to explore the Toyota brand due to their reputation for excellence and reliability. I gleaned Google Reviews for Schaumburg Toyota and a particular Sales Professional named Darek Gniadek was raised repeatedly as a superior sales person known for his communication style, professionalism, competence, knowledge and experience. In May, 2026, my husband and I met with Darek, drove a car we really liked and agreed to a price for a beautiful new Camry Hybrid model. Darek told us the model was very popular and in high demand nationwide so the specific trim/color we wanted was not on the lot. He then told us that our car would be delivered to the dealership from a Toyota plant in Kentucky and that it would take approximately 6 weeks to arrive. However, due to a nationwide shortage for this model plus the fact we ordered specific exterior and interior colors, the car actually took about three months to arrive at the dealership. That delay was no fault of Darek’s. Throughout the three months we waited, Darek communicated with us regularly about the car’s status. Finally, after the car arrived at Schaumburg Toyota, we learned that the total price of the vehicle increased by about $700 during the waiting period. We were upset by the increase since we thought the agreed upon price we negotiated in May was also the car’s “final price.” However, we learned something new about the way Toyota apparently does business. If the specific model/trim of the vehicle you want is not on the dealer’s lot, Toyota can unilaterally raise the price while it is being manufactured and delivered to the dealership. So, you wait out the delayed delivery and then pay more. This surprising and very upsetting news was not communicated by Toyota corporate to Darek, me and/or my husband until the car was shipped to the dealer. My husband and I expressed our marked disappointment in Toyota because this practice, and the optics of this practice to brand new Toyota customers, did not sit right with us. In the end, we realized the price increase was decided by Toyota corporate and was not the fault of Darek or the dealership. However, we felt Toyota should have given the dealership flexibility to increase the discount we had negotiated so in effect the price of the car stayed the same as it was in May. In any event, we decided to purchase the car at the new price and so far have been extremely pleased and impressed with the Camry Hybrid. When my husband and I arrived to pick up the car, Darek arranged for his colleague, Jerry McDuffie, Sales Professional and Master Technology Specialist, to guide me and my husband through all the new and impressive tech in the car. Jerry, like Darek, was a true professional, amiable, highly competent and experienced, patient about our limited knowledge of car tech, and a true pleasure to work with. Jerry also gave me and my husband a thorough tour of the dealership, introduced us to staff within their Service Department, and made sure that no stone was left unturned as we acclimated to our new car and dealership. We also had a very pleasant experience with Daniel C. who very professionally guided us through all the paperwork needed to purchase the car. Overall, with the exception of the unexpected price increase by Toyota corporate, we had an A+ experience working with Darek, Jerry and Daniel. In January, I bought a Subaru Outback from Mercedes-Benz of St. Charles. Unfortunately, some knucklehead totaled that car on the highway. I've been in contact with a lot of dealerships this year and I felt compelled to swing back to say how much better my experience was with this dealership than almost every other dealership I've been in contact with. We visited Schaumburg Toyota expecting the typical car dealership experience, but Cameron was a refreshing change of pace. He was straightforward, knowledgeable, and took the time to answer all of our questions without being overly pushy. Rafael Sanchez reluctantly approached and tried to understand by issue of the front camera not functioning as expected. I only recently had purchased my 2023 4Runner used with Toyota Certified Warranty- I was assured this would be something covered so I wasn't worried. However, because I was from out of state, Rafael took that context to deny me any assistance. He claimed it would be "a lot of phone calls and probably take a long time to get parts if it's even covered" which should be up to the customer to decide honestly. I assured him I would be in town long enough and he just refused and said I should take it back to the original dealer, which was at no point what I'd expect when I just paid so much money for a new, albeit used, car under warranty. He also mentioned it's not a critical item so it's fine to just keep using the car. This is an infuriating experience I've never been so baffled. Just because dealing with your corporate warranty department is a headache, does not give you the right to deny service when I am under said warranty. Horrible impression. Further, when customer care reached out saying I missed my appointment ( I didn't) I explained the situation again, hoping anyone would care enough to make it right without me chasing them down. Unfortunately not, the nice gal who replied to my email said she was passing the info along to Mike Krueger so he can personally follow up. Surprise, complete silence. Terrible experience over all, unfortunately looks like this is a trend in the area so still on the hunt for a service department that won't be so lazy or dismissive.
