America the Melting Pot

One of America’s greatest attributes is the fact that we are a melting pot society.  America is a land where different ethnicities share the same underlying cultural traits, while maintaining and sharing the cultures of their ancestors.  Travelling to other countries where only one culture is present really highlights the uniqueness of America in the fact that, as a country, we’ve embraced the idea of a “little of this, some of that” culture.  And since we have become so good at creating an atmosphere for a melting pot of cultures, we have extended our open arms to a melting pot of automobiles too!

Just as deep-dish pizza became home to Chicago and not Italy, America, and specifically our local Schaumburg Camry dealership, Schaumburg Toyota, has become home to the Toyota Camry, not Japan.  Although Toyota originated as a Japanese automaker and still has its headquarters in the island country, the auto manufacturer has really morphed into a global company.  Many of its parts are manufactured on other shorelines and many of its vehicles are assembled away from Japan as well.  The fact is that the Toyota Schaumburg Camry is the “most-American” vehicle in the world.

The “most-American” vehicle is a title given by Cars.com in their annual American Made Index. This index judges how “American” vehicles are by comparing the percentage of their parts that are made in America, and by noting if they are assembled in America and driven by a good number of Americans.  For three years running, the Toyota Camry has held the top spot on the index, in part thanks to the popularity of the latest model, the 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid, in Chicago.

In order to be considered for a spot on the index, a vehicle must be made of at least 75 percent of materials manufactured domestically.  Additionally, an assembly plant in America is a must if a vehicle hopes to crack the top ten rankings on the index.  The Toyota Camry is assembled in Georgetown, Kentucky and Lafayette, Indiana.  Additionally, Toyota stole two other spots in the top ten of the index – the Toyota Sienna snagged the number six ranking and is assembled in Princeton, Indiana and the Toyota Tundra, made in San Antonio, Texas, earned the number nine spot.  Honda also represented foreign automakers on the American Made Index.
