Buckle Up For Life is a partnership between Toyota and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center that focuses on injury prevention on a national scale. As Cincinnati Children’s Child Passenger Safety Expert and Buckle Up for Life Senior Outreach Specialist Gloria Del Castillo commented in the automaker’s press release introducing the program, “Whether you’re traveling far this holiday season or staying local, no trip with small children is complete without a properly installed car seat… Our goal with these traditions is to offer simple ways to make child passenger safety a part of every family’s routine — during the holidays and throughout the year.”

The “New Holiday Traditions for Child Passenger Safety” program provides several guidelines that can help make your holiday travels with little ones and children safer and more enjoyable:

1. Ensure that all family members who travel with children understand the latest practices regarding child car seats — especially older family members unfamiliar with current approaches.
2. Avoid using a used car seat, as prior damage or even wear and tear can reduce its ability to keep your child safe in an accident.
3. Car seats have an expiration date and can become outdated, so you should make sure yours is still valid and get a new one if yours is out of date.
4. If your child is less than 4’9” tall she or he should be seated in a child booster seat to ensure that your car’s seat belts provide a correct fit and proper protection.
5. Children should be seated rear facing car seats until they reach two years of age or exceed the seat’s specified weight limits and height limits.
