Toyota Looks To The Future With Fuel Cell Vehicle

Technology seems to continually advance at breakneck speeds, and in the automotive world some of the most exciting new innovations are coming from Toyota and their efforts developing fuel cell vehicle concepts.

“Fuel cell electric vehicles will be in our future sooner than many people believe, and in much greater numbers than anyone expected,” said Bob Carter, Toyota Senior Vice President for Automotive Operations.

Toyota recently unveiled their most advanced fuel cell technology to date in the Toyota FCV Fuel Cell Concept at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the largest trade show in the world for technology and electronics and other exciting innovations.  Toyota unveiled two vehicles — a Radiant Blue four-door sedan FCV Concept vehicle that suggests the appearance and configuration when it arrives in Toyota showrooms in the future, and a prototype, camouflaged with tape, used for extensive engineering testing for more than a year.  So far the hydrogen-powered engineering prototype has delivered consistent zero-to-sixty mph performance in the ten-second range, an approximate driving range of 300 miles, and zero emissions.

Toyota has been developing fuel cell technology for more than ten years.  During that time engineers and designers have refined the technology to increase efficiency, reduce weight, and more importantly for drivers in and around Schaumburg and Des Plaines who may be thinking of upgrading to the future of automotive technology with a fuel cell vehicle, reduce costs.

“For years, the use of hydrogen gas to power an electric vehicle has been seen by many smart people as a foolish quest,” said Carter.  “Yes, there are significant challenges.  The first is building the vehicle at a reasonable price for many people.  The second is doing what we can to help kick-start the construction of convenient hydrogen refueling infrastructure.  We’re doing a good job with both and we will launch in 2015.”
